Report of the COSPAR Mars special regions colloquium

International audience; In this paper we present the findings of a COSPAR Mars Special Regions Colloquium held in Rome in 2007. We review and discuss the definition of Mars Special Regions, the physical parameters used to define Mars Special Regions, and physical features on Mars that can be interpreted as Mars Special Regions. We conclude that any region experiencing temperatures > -25 degrees C for a few hours a year and a water activity > 0.5 can potentially allow the replication of terrestrial microorganisms. ESTCube-1 in-orbit experience and lessons learned

ESTCube-1 is a student satellite project lead by the University of Tartu, Estonia, and supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) via Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS). Development of ESTCube-1 has been a collaborative effort with many international partners. The satellite is shown on Figure 1 [1].

The FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) mission proposes to launch a satellite for the global monitoring of steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence in terrestrial vegetation. Fluorescence is a sensitive probe of photosynthetic function in both healthy and physiologically perturbed vegetation, and a powerful non-invasive tool to track the status, resilience, and recovery of photochemical processes and moreover provides important information on overall photosynthetic performance with implications for related carbon sequestration. Multi-phase interstellar clouds in the Vela SNR resolved with XMM-Newton

XMM-Newton spatial/spectral resolution and high effective area allow to deepen our knowledge about the shocks in Supernova Remnants and their interaction with the interstellar medium. We present the analysis of an EPIC observation of the northern rim of the Vela SNR and we compare the X-ray and optical morphology of the emission. We derive a description of the internal structure of the shocked interstellar clouds, arguing that the transmitted shock model is compatible with our data. We also suggest that thermal conduction between clouds and inter-cloud medium is very efficient and produces the evaporation of the clouds in the interstellar medium. � 2005 COSPAR. Coronal mass ejections in the heliosphere

With the advent of the NASA STEREO mission, we are in a position to perform unique investigations of the evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as they propagate through the heliosphere, and thus can investigate the relationship between CMEs and their interplanetary counterparts, so-called interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs). ICME studies have been principally limited to single-point, in-situ observations; interpretation of the in-situ characteristics of ICMEs has been used to derive a range of ICME properties which we can now confirm or refute using the STEREO imaging data. E-sail test payload of the ESTCube-1 nanosatellite

The scientific mission of ESTCube-1, launched in May 2013, is to measure the electric solar wind sail (E-sail) force in orbit. The experiment is planned to push forward the development of the E-sail, a propulsion method recently invented at the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The E-sail is based on extracting momentum from the solar wind plasma flow by using long thin electrically charged tethers. ESTCube-1 is equipped with one such tether, together with hardware capable of deploying and charging it. At the orbital altitude of ESTCube-1 (660–680 km) there is no solar wind present. The exploration of space is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. In the ideal photo album of this century one could hardly avoid including such pictures as our blue planet seen from space and the human footprint on the Moon’s surface; the close-up images of a comet’s nucleus and the rough landscape of Mars; the floating of astronauts in the black vacuum around a space station and the rings of Saturn photographed from an approaching spacecraft.

International audience; The THESEUS project (Towards Human Exploration of Space: aEUropean Strategy) was initiated within the seventh FrameworkProgramme by the European Commission. This project aimed toprovide a cross-cutting, life science-based roadmap for Europe’sstrategy towards human exploration of space, especially for deepspace missions and its relevance to applications on Earth. Toaddress these challenges, relevance of space research on thecardiovascular system, the lungs and kidneys, was discussed in anexpert group and its principal conclusions will be presented in thisarticle.
